Essential Guide to Maintaining a Thriving Freshwater Planted Aquarium: Daily, Weekly, and Monthly Maintenance Tips

Maintaining a planted tank with fish involves a combination of regular tasks, observations, and adjustments. Here's a detailed guide to help you keep your freshwater planted aquarium thriving:

Daily Maintenance and Observation:

Fish Behavior, Fertilization, CO2 & Feeding

  1. Check Fish Behavior:

    • Observe fish behavior daily to ensure they are active and not showing signs of stress or illness, such as changes in color, lethargy, rapid breathing, or abnormal swimming behavior.

    • Quarantine sick fish promptly to prevent the spread of diseases.

    • Look for any aggressive behavior or signs of bullying among fish.

  2. Feeding:

    • Feed your fish a balanced diet, and ensure that all fish have access to food.

    • Remove any uneaten food to prevent water quality issues.

  3. Fertilization:

    • Follow a regular fertilization schedule using liquid or substrate fertilizers to provide essential nutrients for plant growth.

    • Adjust the dosage based on plant requirements and observed nutrient deficiencies.

  4. CO2 Injection:

    • If using a CO2 injection system, monitor and adjust CO2 levels to promote healthy plant growth.

    • Be cautious not to overdose CO2, as it can harm fish.

Weekly Maintenance:

Water Changes, Trim, Equipment Check & Water Quality

  1. Water Changes:

    • Perform a weekly water change of around 20-30% of the tank volume to remove accumulated waste and maintain water quality.

    • Use a gravel vacuum to clean the substrate during water changes.

  2. Trimming Plants:

    • Monitor plant growth and adjust lighting, fertilization, and CO2 injection as needed.

    • Trim any overgrown or decaying plant material to promote healthy growth.

    • Remove dead or yellowing leaves regularly.

  3. Check Equipment:

    • Ensure that all equipment (filter, heater, lights, etc.) is functioning properly.

    • Clean or replace filter media as needed.

  4. Test Water Parameters:

    • Test water parameters (pH, ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, hardness and temperature) regularly using reliable test kits.

    • Adjust water parameters if necessary to meet the requirements of your fish and plants.

Monthly Maintenance:

Prune & Algae

  1. Prune and Propagate Plants:

    • Prune and thin out plants to prevent overcrowding and improve light penetration.

    • Propagate healthy plants by replanting cuttings to encourage new growth.

  2. Algae Control:

    • Keep an eye on algae growth. Scrub off algae from glass, decorations, and plant leaves during water changes.

    • Adjust lighting duration if algae becomes problematic.
